Does making late payments on my auto and home insurance have any impact on my insurance premiums?

person using laptop computer holding card

Yes, late payments can affect your insurance costs, but usually indirectly rather than through an automatic surcharge for one late payment.

If you’re occasionally late

Most auto and home insurers provide a grace period or may charge a late fee. A single late payment typically does not cause your premium to increase immediately.

If late payments become a pattern

Repeated late or missed payments can cause insurers to view you as a higher-risk customer. Some carriers may:

  • Increase premiums at renewal
  • Require full payment instead of monthly installments
  • Decline to renew the policy
  • Consider your payment history when underwriting future coverage

The biggest concern: a policy lapse

If a payment is missed long enough that your policy is canceled for nonpayment, that can have a significant impact. A lapse in auto or homeowners insurance may:

  • Lead to higher premiums with your current or a new insurer
  • Make it harder to find coverage
  • Result in loss of continuous-coverage discounts

What about your credit score?

Insurance companies generally do not report routine premium payments to credit bureaus. However, if an unpaid balance is sent to collections, it can negatively affect your credit. In many states, insurers use credit-based insurance scores when setting auto and homeowners rates, so credit problems can indirectly contribute to higher premiums.

For Washington State

Washington has restrictions on the use of credit information for insurance rating compared with many states, so the impact through credit may be less relevant than in other states. However, a lapse for nonpayment can still affect your underwriting profile and future premiums.

Bottom line: One occasional late payment is unlikely to raise your rates by itself. Repeated late payments, collections activity, or a cancellation/lapse for nonpayment can absolutely lead to higher premiums or fewer insurance options later.
