Auto Insurance
Most personal auto policies do not cover e-bikes because they are generally not considered insured automobiles and typically aren’t listed on an auto policy.
Homeowners Insurance
Homeowners insurance is more complicated:
- Some insurers treat lower-speed e-bikes similarly to bicycles and may provide limited theft or property coverage under personal property coverage.
- Many policies have coverage limits, exclusions, or deductibles that make reimbursement much lower than the bike’s value.
- Liability coverage while riding the e-bike is often excluded or restricted, especially if the insurer considers the e-bike a motorized vehicle.
- Faster e-bikes, particularly many Class 3 models (up to 28 mph), are more likely to be excluded.
What we Recommend
Check:
- Your e-bike’s class (Class 1, 2, or 3).
- Motor wattage (commonly 750W or less vs. above 750W).
- Your homeowners policy’s definitions of “motor vehicle” and “personal property.”
