How to deal with an automobile smash and grab?

Car interior with shattered glass from a broken window.

Here’s a clear, practical guide you can follow if you experience an automobile smash-and-grab.

What to Do Immediately After a Smash-and-Grab

1. Stay Safe

  • Make sure the area is safe before approaching your vehicle.

  • If the incident is in progress, do not intervene—call 911.

2. Document the Damage

  • Take photos of:

    • Broken windows or doors

    • Damage to the frame or paint

    • Items that were stolen

    • The surrounding area (helpful for police/insurance)

3. File a Police Report

  • Call the non-emergency line or file online (if your city allows).

  • Provide serial numbers for stolen items if you have them.

  • A report is usually required for insurance claims.

4. Prevent Further Damage

  • Carefully remove loose glass.

  • Cover the opening with a garbage bag or temporary plastic cover to keep out rain and protect the interior.

Insurance Considerations

Auto Insurance

  • Smash-and-grabs fall under comprehensive coverage, not collision.

  • It covers:

    • Window/glass repairs

    • Damage to the vehicle

    • Does NOT cover stolen personal items inside the car (that’s homeowners or renters insurance).

Homeowners/Renters Insurance

  • Personal property stolen from your car (laptops, bags, tools, etc.) is covered under your policy—subject to your deductible.

  • If the loss amount is low, consider your philosophy of “insurance is for big losses” before filing a claim to avoid rate increases.

Pro Tip:

If the glass repair cost is close to your auto deductible, it may not be worth filing a claim.

Repairs

Window Repair/Replacement

  • Most glass repair companies can come to you the same day.

  • Some insurers have preferred vendors and may coordinate billing.

Interior Cleaning

  • A detailer can vacuum out remaining shards and clean upholstery.

Security Check

  • Ensure the locks, alarm sensors, and window tracks still function properly.

How to Prevent Future Smash-and-Grabs

  • Keep valuables out of sight (even chargers attract thieves).

  • Park in well-lit, busy areas.

  • Use window tinting, sunshades, or cargo covers to reduce visibility of interior.

  • Install a car alarm or dash cam with motion detection.

  • Avoid leaving bags or backpacks in the car—even if empty.
