What is the best way I can save money on my auto and home insurance without sacrificing coverage?

person holding fan of U.S. dollars banknote

Here are the most effective ways to save money on your auto and home insurance without sacrificing coverage, while still keeping the protection you need for the big losses (which aligns with how you already think about insurance):

1. Raise Your Deductibles Strategically

This is the #1 way to lower premiums without weakening your protection.
Since you already believe in using insurance for large losses, higher deductibles make perfect sense.

  • Consider $1,000–$2,500 deductibles on home

  • Consider $500–$1,000+ deductibles on auto physical damage

This affects small claims only, not catastrophic protection.

2. Bundle Home + Auto With the Same Carrier

Bundling can cut 10–25% off your premiums.
Some carriers offer deeper savings if you add a third line (umbrella, life, RV, etc.).

3. Improve Your Credit (Insurance Score)

Insurers heavily price based on credit. Even small improvements can significantly reduce premiums.
This is often the largest hidden savings opportunity.

4. Don’t File Small Claims

You already follow this philosophy—and it saves you money.
Companies now surcharge for even minor losses, especially home claims.
Avoiding small claims protects your long-term rates.

5. Review your insurance annually for accuracy

This ensures that your policy information is accurate for such things as miles driven, alarm discounts, telematics, all applicable discounts are applied, etc.

6. Check for Easy Home Discounts

These do NOT reduce coverage:

  • Central burglar/fire alarms

  • Smart home devices (water leak detectors, automatic shutoff valves)

  • New roof or impact-resistant roofing

  • Gated community or HOAs

  • Fire-resistant materials (hardie siding, metal roof, etc.)

7. Review Your Liability Limits (Not Reduce Them)

This sounds counterintuitive—don’t lower liability limits (it’s cheap protection).
Instead, make sure other coverage isn’t duplicated:

  • You often don’t need roadside assistance if you already have AAA or a vehicle subscription.

  • You may not need rental car coverage if you have a spare vehicle.

  • Drop comprehensive/collision on older cars (usually once value < $3,000–$5,000).

These changes don’t expose you to large losses.

8. Get an Umbrella Policy Instead of Maxing Out Auto/Home

Sometimes a $1M umbrella bundled with your carrier costs only $15–$25/month and triggers discounts on your home and auto—so the umbrella partly pays for itself.

9. Ask for “Package Rewrite” Discounts

Many insurers give extra savings when an agent rewrites your entire package to a newer version of the same policy. It refreshes discounts and applies new rating models.

10. Work With an Independent Agent

They can shop multiple top carriers without you doing the work—and help you avoid companies that only look cheap up front.

If you’d like, I can:

  • Tell you which savings options apply best in your situation

  • Help you choose ideal deductibles

  • Break down home + auto discounts line-by-line for maximum savings
